You’ve heard the statistics on how many people fear public speaking and you’ve probably heard that most people would rather be the deceased than the person giving the eulogy!  That’s just plain morbid!  Public speaking is like anything else we eventually master…we’re bad at it before we become good at it.  It was like that when you learned how to write your name, when you learned how to drive, and when you learned how to do just about anything else.

Why do so many people, not just stop trying to become a better public speaker, but even develop a fear of the very thought of getting up in front of people to speak publicly?  I’m sorry but I’m not going to go into hypothetical psychological theories to help you answer this question, but I can tell you that you can become a great speaker.  You can learn how to thoroughly enjoy the process of speaking in public.  There are just a few steps to take to become a more effective communicator.  Here are the steps:

1. Make A Decision:  The biggest and most important step is to decide that you can do this and to decide you are going to do this now!
2. Get Educated:  The next step is to learn about the process of public speaking.  Learn how people finally overcome their fear of public speaking.  Are there certain consistencies in activities that have worked for a large number of people?  What are these activities?  How much of public speaking is psychological?  Are there certain skills that I can develop to overcome my fear of public speaking?  What kinds of things should I be doing to become a better speaker?   Read, listen, and tune in to all the free resources that are online.  There has never been a better time to be curious about how to do different things, how to discover new skills, and how to become the best you can become…speaking just may help you do this!
3. Take Action:  Take a public speaking course and speak.   Speak again.  Speak again.  Speak again.  Speak again.  Keep doing it.  Sooner or later you’ll get good at it, just like you did at writing your name, learning how to drive, and all the other skills you developed by doing your homework, taking action, and keeping at it!

It’s a busy time of the year.  There is a sense of optimism in the air.  All your 2012 goals are still possible and the plans and strategies to achieve all your goals are in the making!  In this month’s CCF Continuing Education Module (free for all CCF grads!) we will explore a number of time management software programs and strategies to make all your goals a little easier to accomplish!  You’ll also hear from some leading coaches who share their thoughts on some of the better programs on the market.  Stay tuned!

Have you heard the news?  Life Coach Certification is going to become legislated and you will be required to be a licensed Certified Life Coach, and you will be required to pay annual fees to both the state or province you live in as well as a primary Life Coach Training “governing body.”  You may have heard this kind of non-sense.  Thank God it is not true!

Although Life Coach Training and Certified Life Coach Programs will not be legislated in the near future it isn’t stopping some Life Coach Training organizations from promoting this fear-based rumour.  The Certified Coaches Federation has certified over 6,500 Life Coaches and Business Coaches since 2006, and as the leader in Life Coach Certification, we are opposed to any legislation that could potentially impact the Life Coaching Profession for the following reasons:

1. Life Coaching is not psychotherapy.  The primary process a Life Coach and his/her client is engaged in is the process of achieving a goal, identifying any potential obstacles along the way, and having an ongoing relationship around the process. 
2. The number one criteria to qualify as a Life Coach, certified or not, is your life experience.  This is far more important to your client than how much money you spent to get certified, who certified you, or how long it took to get certified.
3. A credible Life Coach Training organization will offer new and seasoned Life Coaches and Business Coaches instruction and training on language, because 99% of the coaching process is perspective.  How well you can communicate will ultimately determine how well you can give your clients perspective.  A good Life Coach Certification Program will do this for a modest price, and do so in as little as 2 days.
4. The fear-based sales pitch coming from the expensive, time consuming, and buracratic Life Coach Training Schools only serve one purpose, and that is to justify an expensive tuition that isn’t worth the money or time.  The threat of pending legislation is getting old and it’s no longer working, because it’s not happening. 
5. The Certified Coaches Federation has always said that the number one criteria to “qualify” as a Coach is your real life experience, and we want to build a real long-term relationship with Coaches. To prove it we offer a free life-time membership in our continuing education program, once you’ve completed our training program.  No addtional fees.  Our Certified Master Coach graduates (http://www.certifiedmastercoach.com) can re-take this 10 week online business development course for free, for life, as long as they want.

The coach training business has exploded in the last 10 years.  Today you can get certified to become a Life Coach or Business Coach at Universities, Community Colleges, and hundreds of both for-profit and non-profit organizations.  Legislation on Life Coach Certification would only benefit cash-strapped local governments and a handful of Coach Training “authorities” who are trying to have all coach training programs become governed by their rules, policies and out-dated approaches; this would mean the end of coaching as we know it. The reason you even considered entering this field was most likely because you believe in helping others, you believe in the potential of others, and you believe we all have unlimited potential.   The leaders in the Life Coach Training profession will never allow any single Coach Training Certification “governing authority” to tell the rest of us how to teach and certify others to become Life Coaches because that would mean the end of innovation and the beginning of conformity and mediocrity, and we’re just not going to let that happen!

Do you think the world needs to be saved?  The answer really depends on, of course, your perspective.  If you believe the growing concern over nuclear arms development, pollution, the melting of our polar ice-caps, and rampant corporate greed pose a few threats, then you may conclude that the world does need to be saved.  This is where you come in!  Surprised?

You see, one of the big problems in the world today is complacency.  Everybody thinks somebody else is going to do something; that’s complacency!  The world needs more super-heroes!  Don’t worry you won’t have to put spandex on or any kind of costume to be the kind of hero I’m talking about…not yet anyway!  The idea that we can all be heroes is more than an idea, it’s a fact.

You can stand up for what’s important, what you value, and what you believe in right now.  You can help others do the same.  Would you believe a Life Coach wears the invisible outfit of a super-hero?  When you can help others remove self-doubt, see past their troubles into the land of possibility, and learn how to take some small steps towards the path of their true intentions, then you’ve become a super-hero.

A very good friend of mine, and former CCF Trainer, Dee Yoh, passed away this past Tuesday from cancer.  This woman lived life with the kind of zest most people only dream of.  She was attending personal development workshops right down to the last few weeks of her life…knowing what her fate was.  Look below at a Facebook entry she made just a week before passing:

My fav quote: “Life is not a journey to the grave with the
intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body,but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming — WOO HOO– What a Ride!”

Then Dee adds “Now that is what I’m talking about! I’ve had a great life, STILL AM!”  That post, from Dee’s Facebook page, was on July 31st, 2011.  She passed away on August 9th, 2011.  By example means through your actions more so than your words.  For the last six months of Dee’s life she coached all who knew her, through her actions, on how to be fearless, how to be brave, how to be joyful, and many other positive lessons…all while being in terrible pain from the cancer and knowing her life would soon end.  Dee was a CCF Trainer, and she was one of our best!  She would tell you that it’s the life events that you have survived, reflected on, and learned lessons from that determine your ability to Be A Life Coach!

If you’re real lucky, you’ll get to know a few people like Dee Yoh…people who don’t hold back and give everything 100%.  And if you don’t know anyone like this my only advice is to decide, right now, to become someone like this!
