One of the reasons why most people are not getting the most
out of life is that they allow any and all thoughts to enter
into their minds. We’ve been conditioned to take it
all in--the rules and admonitions of our parents, our teachers,
our pastor and the sensationalizing of the news media--without
giving a second thought to the potential negative consequences
of such conditioning for our subconscious mind, not to mention
our spirit. The images that you consistently program into
your subconscious mind will ultimately determine the outcome
of your life.
Most people are not even aware of how or why they see the
world the way they do; they’re too caught up in all
the mini-urgencies of the day. Often, negative events that
have happened five, ten or even twenty years ago are unconsciously
framing our perception of who we are today. For example,
if you were verbally or physically abused, grew up in a
home with an alcoholic parent, or perhaps were terribly
shy as a child, you may be living your life today through
the lens of these debilitating memories without realizing
it.
To create a powerful future, you must learn to control your
thinking. Two of the most common stumbling blocks to getting
the most out of each day are recurring negative thought
patterns such as “No one likes me,” or “I’m
not good enough” and by identifying yourself with
the events of the past such as “I never got a college
degree” or “My husband left me.”
The truth, however, is that each day you begin with a sparkling
clean slate. When you wake up each morning you have the
opportunity to choose who you want to be and how you want
to respond to the events of your life. In a sense you are
the writer, the director and the producer of every event
that ever takes place in your life. Even more importantly,
you play the leading role in this movie.
It is time to realize, however, that the person you are
today and the person you will become tomorrow are ultimately
decided by the choices you make today, the beliefs you hold,
and the story you continue to write about your life. Once
you know this, your life begins to have a whole new sense
of freedom, meaning and power.
The first day you realize that your story can be created
in the here and now will be the last day that your past
will have any significant impact on your life. It is only
then that you will realize that your past is like the wake
of a boat – behind you!
